Sportfishing can be a very rewarding activity if it is done correctly the first time. After the first outing on the high seas, the rest is normally smooth sailing. First, find a local saltwater fishing club or a lodge. You can typically find ads for these in a phonebook, by word of mouth, or on some forums online. However, be prepared to cough up a fair amount of money, as charters can cost up to $150 per person. Next, call the company and find out what kind of boats they have available for day or half day rental. When fishing in a group, a 35-foot boat should do just fine.

Depending on the target species, types of bait can vary greatly. Try your luck with cut mackerel or pogies, available at most local bait shops. If going fishing without a guide, you will definitely have to get your hands dirty preparing bait. The preparation of cut bait is fairly simple. All you have to do is cut a baitfish into three or four pieces depending on the size of the target species. Next, put a hook into the piece of bait so that the hook goes around the spine of the fish. Remember to put a weight of about 1 ounce on the line about 2 feet closer to the rod tip than the bait. Recommended line strength is about 30 pound test.
Continue reading A Beginner's Guide to Sportfishing

A Beginner's Guide to Sportfishing originally appeared on Luxist on Sun, 14 Mar 2010 08:01:00 EST. We've all heard that running barefoot might just be better for the body than wearing heavy running shoes, but it's not always feasible to run or desirable to run that way. A new foot-friendly solution can be found in the EVO performance shoe from Terra Plana. The shoe is a collaboration between Galahad Clark, owner of Terra Plana and Asher Clark, his cousin and head designer, both seventh generation shoemakers.

The EVO is designed to be like running barefoot but better. The minimalist running shoe weighs only eight ounces and has breathable mesh and lightweight micro fiber reinforcements. The soft rubber sole is just 4mm. The shoe comes in yellow, black, white, pink, blue and green and sells for $160.
EVO Shoes Offer A Close-To-The-Earth Experience originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 13 Mar 2010 11:02:00 EST. Peppers signed a six-year, $91.5 million deal with the Bears last Friday. On Saturday at around 2:30 a.m. at the Crescendo nightclub, the DJ made an announcement and the staff brought out 25 bottles of Perrier Jouet Fleur de Champagne (at around $350 per bottle). The bottles were topped with sparklers making quite an impressive presentation. The DJ told the crowd that it was Peppers' way of saying thank you to the city. Peppers sat in a VIP area and ordered three bottles of Ace of Spades Rose for his own table. Check out video of the very happy crowd after the jump.
Continue reading Julius Peppers Wins Over His New Town With Pricey Champagne

Julius Peppers Wins Over His New Town With Pricey Champagne originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 19:01:00 EST. Last fall he listed his New York City loft for $1.5 million. But now it is back on the market at an increased price. His 2,000-square-foot loft at 25 Murray St. in TriBeCa is listed for $1.85 million.

The NY Post reports that he bought the home in 2006 for $1.6 million. Strahan's two-bedroom unit is a full service pre-war condominium with exposed brick, shiny wood floors and an eat-in kitchen. The 15-foot ceilings gave the 6'5" Strahan plenty of head room. The decor has obviously been staged in this one, Strahan has long ago decamped for greener pastures. He is engaged to Nicole Murphy, Eddie Murphy's ex-wife, a woman with some substantial real estate of her own.
In addition to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean and the incredible Sandy Lane resort, the former British colony of Barbados also has a strong sporting tradition; aristocrats and officers have been playing polo there since 1884. Now you can learn the sport of kings during your stay on the island thanks to a new offering at the Barbados Polo Club. The club's swashbuckling vice captain Jeff Evelyn is now offering lessons consisting of personal instruction on wielding the mallet, hitting the ball, and of course staying in the saddle while doing so; polo ponies are provided from the club's stable. He also stages practice matches at the club's Holders polo grounds in St. James so you can try your hand at scoring a goal. The Barbados Polo Open, where world-class sportsmen such as Britain's Prince Harry compete, takes place March 14-21.
At the time of the closure there was talk that there might be a new location in the future but that never materialized. Now the AP is reporting that the owner of the shopping center where the restaurant was located is suing Webber and his business partner. Webber and his partner had signed a 20-year lease back in 2005.

Promenade, the company that owns the Promenade at Sacramento Gateway Shopping Center, wants around $3 million to satisfy overdue rent as well as pay for cleanup costs and other fees and get the property ready for re-leasing. Webber and his partner, Jeff Dudum of Dudum Sports and Entertainment are disputing the length of the lease which was reportedly signed with the shopping center's former owner, Opus West Corp., which is now bankrupt.

In October 2009, Sacramento police arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting outside the restaurant. The restaurant served sandwiches, steak and a variety of burgers including the "Fab 5," a burger with 44 ounces of choice Angus beef which sold for $29.50.
Chris Webber Sued Over Restaurant Closure originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 20:01:00 EST. For some the first Saturday in May is all about the horses, and for others, the Kentucky Derby is all about the hats. There are very few occasions left in today's society where woman can wear incredible millinery creations that really bring back another era. For those who love both the hats and the horses, or are just in a philanthropic mood, it is not too late to support retired racehorses and be a recipient of a fantastic custom made hat to wear to the big day.

Maggie Mae Designs[TM] has teamed up with Old Friends to create a series of one-of-a-kind Derby hats inspired by specific retired racehorses. Old Friends is an equine farm that specializes in the rescue and retirement of pensioned Thoroughbreds. Many in the horse world were devastated by the death of Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand in a Japanese slaughterhouse in 2002. In an effort to ensure that this never happens again the organization focuses on bringing at-risk racehorses, whose active careers are over to experience the dignified retirement they deserve. The only retirement farm to accept stallions, Old Friends is committed to providing a great retirement for these amazing athletes. The farm is open to the public and hosts tours daily.
Lacoste: The Element of Style, a smashing new book dedicated to the famed French brand about to be published by Assouline, covers much more than just sport shirts; it's about savoir vivre and savoir faire, literally "how to live" and "how to be" with plenty of style. It's designed to illuminate the contemporary relevance of the legacy of René Lacoste, the brand's founder who was the best tennis player in the world at the end of the Roaring Twenties. Nicknamed "Le Crocodile" for his tenacity on the court he began sporting an alligator patch on his blazers starting in 1927, which then became the basis for the sportswear brand he founded in 1933, one of the first labels to marry American functionality with European elegance. He also designed tennis rackets and other equipment, filing 25 patents during his lifetime.

The logo was applied to the easy breathing piqué sports shirts Lacoste favored, which helped him to cope with the heat on American tennis courts. It was a major revolution for players, who until then had worn starched, long-sleeve dress shirts even on the hottest days. The book comes in various different colors, a nod to the fact that Lacoste began producing its shirts in dozens of different shades well before anyone else caught the color bug. Until the 1950s, only white polos and shirts were allowed on tennis courts, but beginning in 1951, the company dared to add contrasting elements in navy blue, then red. That helped revitalize fashion both on and off the courts and presaged the color explosion of the 1960s.

Those loud curling pants. Aboriginal costumes. Ice dancing get-ups channeling Elvis. There's a lot of fashion going on at the Olympics.

The Norwegian curlers' red-white-and-blue diamond-printed pants made worldwide headlines for their court jesterness. But c'mon, they called attention to this sleepy sport. Has there ever been so much talking about curling? The pants, meanwhile, have become hot sellers. I contacted loudmouthgolf.com yesterday and they confirmed they are sold out of the now-famous Dixie-A style.

Nothing could outdo the curling pants...or so I thought. Then Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin came skating along. The Russian ice dancers broke out costumes consisting of red loincloths, some rope and white tribal markings. They took these looks out for a spin recently and offended the aboriginal culture in Australia in so doing. Before they slipped into the look again at the Olympics, the duo made nice with Canada's indigenous people. Less has been said about the nutball costumes themselves. They looked like they were stitched at the felt crafts table at junior camp. And what's with the foliage?

Canada's snowboarding uniforms were widely debated over whether or not the pants were too tight. Hey, as long as you can move in them. Skinny pants are the thing these days, after all.

As well as Aston Martin is known to discerning clients around the world for their top-of-the-line sportscars, in the world of motor racing, the stoic British marque is renowned as a force to be reckoned with. Aston's motorsport activities, however, extend beyond their own factory teams to provide customers with competition machines of their own in various classes of GT racing. The starting point is the Vantage GT4 and the Vantage N24 that came before it. Now that Aston has sold these client racing machines to gentleman racers and privateers around the world, the company is establishing its own spec racing series to give its clients a chance to race against each other on some of Britain's finest circuits in similar machinery.

Following in the footsteps of such championships as the Ferrari Challenge, Porsche Supercup and Lamborghini Super Trofeo - to say nothing of Aston's own Asia Cup - the Aston Martin British GT4 Championship is kicking off its first season, consisting of five races across the UK and one in Belgium. About $20k will get existing owners of race-spec Vantages a full season of racing, including transportation, hospitality and specially-made racing suits. The company's experienced race engineers will be on hand at each event to provide service that reaches from simple tire-swaps to a complete engine replacement. At the end of the season, the winner will get a chance to test drive either a GT2 or GT3-level Aston Martin racing car.
Aston Martin establishes British Series for Gentleman Racers originally appeared on Luxist on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 08:02:00 EST. Howie Long is pitching cars, Troy Aikman is shilling for rental furniture and former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway wants you to drink his vodka. Elway had joined the board of Nude Vodka, a Colorado-based company.

As part of his involvement the vodka brand is offering "An Evening with Elway." Each bottle of vodka sold in Colorado has a number on the neck label. Seven numbers will be randomly drawn on April 30, 2010. The holders of those bottle numbers will be invited to meet and spend some time with Elway, a man that Shawn Harlan, CEO and Founder of NUDE Spirits calls "Colorado's living icon." The winners can each bring a guest (both must be 21 or over). Winning numbers will be announced on the Nude vodka website, via Twitter, and FaceBook and winners will be invited to attend a private event with John Elway, have their winning bottle signed by John Elway and grab a quick photo.

For some this can be a great investment but it doesn't always have a happy ending. Baseball player Steve Finley has filed bankruptcy on behalf of BRG Restaurant Group, the company that owned his upscale, San Diego area Flight Restaurant. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that last year, Finley ran into trouble, handing out paychecks that bounced. Finley has said he still wants to pay his former employees but that the business ran out of money because of the economy and management problems which left him as the restaurant manager at one point.

In January, Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation papers were filed but this week Finley canceled the bankruptcy because he is close to a deal to have someone else take over the restaurant and pay back wages. Finley is a World Series champion and five-time Gold Glove Award winner who opened the restaurant with a team of investors. It overlooks the polo fields at El Camino Real and Via de la Valle in Del Mar. The restaurant served pricey Italian fare but also had a bar with a nightclub atmosphere. It once featured dancing girls dressed as angels, a nod to one of Finley's former teams (he played a brief season for the Angels in 2005).

UPDATE: A picture of Chuck Finley was mistakenly used in an earlier version of this story, we regret the error.
Talk about "Scotch on ice" - with the excitement of the 2010 Winter Olympics upon us, Laphroaig single malt Scotch is kicking off a year-long celebration of Scottish heritage with its official sponsorship of the United States Curling Association (USCA). At an event to kick off the partnership, bringing together two of the greatest traditions from Scotland - Laphroaig and curling - Scotch Malt Master Simon Brook (right) engaged guests in a Laphroaig tasting while Jessica Schultz (left), 2006 Winter Olympics Curling Team Member, led a hands-on curling demonstration.

Rich, smoky Laphroaig, established in 1815 on Islay, holds a Royal Warrant from the Prince of Wales and bears his heraldic three-feather badge on its label. "There are few brands out there that have as deep a Scottish history as Laphroaig," notes USCA President Leland Rich. "We are honored to have such a respected brand sponsor the United States Curling Association. This truly brings the spirit of the winter games to new heights." Often referred to as "chess on ice" or "winter golf," curling originated in Scotland in the 16th century.
Laphroaig Celebrates Scottish Heritage with Curling Partnership originally appeared on Luxist on Sat, 20 Feb 2010 08:02:00 EST. The idea of trumpeting golf as a corporate perk seems as dated as the oversize shirts so many Tour pros (including Tiger Woods) somehow saw fit to wear not that long ago. But even in these chastened economic times, it's hard to ignore the game's effectiveness as a business tool. Which explains the recent announcement of the Tour Club, a fantasy-like club that offers, among other amenities, access to a network of private and resort courses, lodging at luxury golf residences, and VIP access to PGA tournaments and other sporting events.

The Tour Club bills itself as the first national sports entertainment club. Membership is open to families and individuals as well as to businesses, but it's conceived primarily for corporate entertaining. The portfolio of residences--the Tour Club has the same parent company as the destination club Quintess--includes retreats in places such as Pinehurst, N.C.; Bend, Ore. (see Pronghorn, above); and Los Cabos, Mexico. The list of golf clubs consists mainly of Tournament Players Clubs (TPC)--many of them well-regarded, some, like the remodeled TPC Boston, outstanding, all of them high-end.
Shooting grouse at one's country estate in England is a time-honored tradition, and every sporting gentleman worthy of the name owns a pair of fine bespoke shotguns from Purdey or Holland & Holland. Of course it's thirsty work, and so Viscount David Linley has come up with the perfect accessory to put in the back of the Range Rover when setting off for a day's sport. The Linley Shooting Companion (above), priced at about $5,600, is a traveling case constructed of oiled walnut with saddle leather handles and an inlaid engravable, hallmarked sterling silver plaque. The case contains two lead crystal decanters with sterling silver plaques laid onto square rosewood stoppers, a cigar cutter and a walnut box to hold eight Corona No. 5's. A removable walnut rack walnut holds eight pewter tumblers, numbered 1 to 8 to reference the shooting pegs given to sportsmen denoting their gun positions.
Cawdor Castle, one of Scotland's greatest estates which dates back to 1380, is the centerpiece of a beautiful new book focusing on the very best of Scottish style. Highland Living: Landscape, Style, and Traditions of Scotland (Flammarion, $39.95) by Stéphane Bern and Franck Ferrand with photographs by Guillaume de Laubier opens with a foreword by the castle's formidable mistress, Angelika, the Dowager Countess Cawdor (above). Born in Bohemia and raised in Africa, the exotic beauty was a fashion editor at Vogue and directed a marketing company in Paris before marrying the late Hugh, 6th Earl Cawdor and 24th Thane, and falling in love with the Scottish Highlands. In 30 years at Cawdor she has given new life to the legendary estate while preserving its historic heritage and way of Highland living.

At the heart of Scotland lies the legendary Cawdor Castle, best known for its literary connection to William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, the title character of which was made Thane of Cawdor. With its rich history, vibrant grounds and deep lochs, ancient, stony ruins, stewardship of revered traditions, and completely sustainable existence, the Cawdor estate, occupying over 49,000 acres, exemplifies the essence of the Highlands. Its magnificent interiors are filled with glorious antiques and handcrafted furniture, tartan accessories, hunting trophies and painted landscapes. Kilts and bagpipes, salmon and fly fishing, grouse shooting, hunting dogs, Land Rovers, shotguns and Barbour jackets, the shady realm of the Big Wood, thematic gardens, windswept moors, haggis and Scotch whisky are all part of life at the storied Castle.
The $10 million Dubai World Cup, the world's richest horse race, is slated to be held on March 27, 2010 at the new Meydan Racetrack in Dubai. The complex however is open and the first races of the season took place the last week in January at the start of the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

The new complex cost $2 billion to build and is quite unlike anything else in the horse racing world. In part this is due to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the ruler of Dubai and the driving force behind the racing region. In something out of another era, he had a special route built to the venue just so he can avoid traffic and arrive by boat. The complex and the Dubai creek are now linked by a 4 kilometer canal so the ruler can travel with ease and avoid any log jams that build up in the falcon shaped parking lot which has a capacity for 10,000 cars.
The team fielded by famed French jeweler Cartier beat back rivals Brioni, Maserati and Swiss banking house Julius Baer to capture the 26th World Polo Cup on Snow in St. Moritz the other day. 15,000 well-heeled spectators cheered on during the four-day event, culminating in a nail-biting finale where Cartier and Julius Baer were tied 3 - 3 up until the very last minute when Cartier won a penalty shot with only 8 seconds remaining on the clock. A team of seven well-known Swiss star chefs with a combined total of 118 Gault-Millau points catered to the guests on the chic resort's frozen lake where the matches are staged. In snow polo the ponies are shod with special cleated shoes to provide better traction, and the ball is larger, lighter, and painted bright red to accommodate winter conditions.
Cartier Captures Snow Polo World Cup in St. Moritz originally appeared on Luxist on Tue, 09 Feb 2010 07:01:00 EST.
